MCWA Publication Division Overview
The Michigan Civil War Association’s purpose is to share Michigan’s stories of sacrifice, contribution, and impact during the Civil War era. Exploration of the military, social, political, and economic histories of Michiganders, especially those whose stories may have been traditionally marginalized and previously under-told, will be shared and available.
Launched in Fall 2022 and intended to be an annual event, the Michigan Civil War Association is publishing a series of scholarly monographs designed for popular appeal. It began with the purpose of bringing to light diverse stories via sometimes previously published materials no longer readily available or never in print, supplemented with appropriate annotations. As it has progressed, volumes have increased in the content that consists of exposition of original sources. Civil War actors are allowed to speak, frequently through full quotes, a practice that is atypical in much of the literature.
Each book has these essential attributes:
- Hardcover
- Affordable cost
- Beautifully designed with:
- Appropriate maps and illustrations
- Fully sourced with careful, thorough citations
- Footnotes on the page, not separated, not endnotes, not elsewhere (e.g. online)
- Extensive appendices appealing to those who like to dive deep into interesting side studies
Notwithstanding the purpose of illuminating the Michigan aspects, each book is designed to be of interest to all students of the Civil War. Each sheds light on the dramatic actors and the events they helped shape with a fresh and novel approach.
Each book contains reviews by noted historians and cultural experts who have read the manuscript and endorse it with their own personal praise.
Publications we have authored have sold thousands of copies. All net profits go to the Michigan Civil War Association for projects and activities that further our mission.
